Budget, Bussing, and Calendar Changes…

Dear Butler Public Schools Community,

At the Board of Education meeting last Thursday, the Board unanimously approved the Tentative 2016-2017 District Budget. The budget will now be submitted to the Executive County Superintendent for approval. Once approval is received, we will advertise this budget in the local newspaper and hold a Public Hearing on the Budget on Monday, April 25 at 7:30pm in the BHS Library/Media Center. Despite rising fixed costs, this budget is very efficient and holds the tax levy increase to only 2.82%, the lowest in years.

One program that was not included in the budget was courtesy bussing for students living east of Route 23. Students living east of Route 23 will only be bussed to school if they live more than 2.0 miles from Aaron Decker School or Richard Butler School or more than 2.5 miles from Butler High School. Students living west of Route 23 will continue to receive bussing services due to the hazardous nature of having to cross a state highway. Please note, these changes will begin in September 2016 and will not affect bussing services this school year.

To help accommodate parents, the YMCA will be offering “Before Care” at Aaron Decker School beginning in September. Before Care hours will begin at approximately 6:45am; After Care hours will remain the same. The YMCA will have additional information (registration forms, prices, etc.) available to parents shortly.

Last year, the Board of Education approved the 2015-2016 district calendar with 5 “emergency closing/snow days”. Since we have only used one of these days, the 2015-2016 district calendar has been amended as follows:

  • Friday, May 27 – Closed
  • Tuesday, May 31 – Closed
  • Tuesday, June 21 – Last day of classes for students/early dismissal
  • Wednesday, June 22 – Schools closed for students; staff professional development day
  • Thursday, June 23 – Closed
  • Friday, June 24 – Closed

Richard Butler School graduation will be held on Monday, June 20 at 7:00pm. Butler High School Graduation will be held on Tuesday, June 21 at 7:00pm. Please note, the Board of Education meeting originally scheduled for Monday, June 20 has been cancelled. In the event that one extra “emergency closing day” is used between now and the last day of school, that day will have to be added back to the calendar.

Lastly, the 2016-2017 district calendar was approved and has been posted on our website. The first day for staff is Tuesday, September 6, 2016 and the first day for students is Wednesday, September 7, 2016.

If you have any questions about these matters, please do not hesitate to contact me as school.

Sincerely,

Alex Anemone, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
